Aucamp confirms red meat market access successfully negotiated with Egypt
Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp has announced a breakthrough in export negotiations with Egypt that is set to deliver a significant boost to South Africa's red meat industry.
Speaking at the Agri North West Congress on September 3, Aucamp said the country's agriculture sector has been facing one of the biggest Foot-and-Mouth Disease outbreaks in decades, which necessitates recovery in the market.
South Africa and Egypt successfully concluded negotiations on the Veterinary Health Certificate governing the export of red meat from South Africa to Egypt, which paves the way for South African beef and livestock producers to access Egypt’s substantial consumer market. The certificate not only provides exporters with a clear regulatory framework for accessing the Eqyptian market, it also ensures that the necessary animal health and safety requirements are met.
Shipments will be cleared to move once the final signatures have been formally appended to the agreement.
Aucamp emphasised that the outcome of the negotiations was achieved through constructive engagement with the Egyptian veterinary authorities and that South Africa's government remains committed to strengthening international trade relations and expanding market access opportunities for local red meat producers.
